INTRODUCTION

     
Computer Studies is taught as an examination subject at year 11, 12 and 13 levels and as a core subject at all levels. In the core classes, students learn Microsoft Office Applications and how to use the internet. Computer skills are also taught to our vocational students. There are two specialized computer studies teachers at Khalsa College.
     
     

COMPUTING/INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAREERS

     
A wide variety of career options are available for computer specialists. Some career options are – Computer Engineers, Programmers, Systems Analysts, Database Administrators, Network Engineers, Web Designers, computer teachers/trainers, computer salespeople and computer technicians. After doing computer studies at high school, students can continue with Computing Science, Information Systems or Information Technology at tertiary levels.
     
     

WHY STUDY COMPUTER STUDIES

     
In this 21st century, any career an individual pursues requires computer literacy. Hence, computer skills are a pre-requisite for a successful career in any field.
     
     

EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES

     
EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES There are three computer labs. Computer lab 1 has N-Computing system with 20 users. Computer Lab2 has N-Computing system with 6 users and 6 separate computer sets, whereas as new OT Lab has 10 new computers. All computers in school are loaded with Windows 7 and MS Office 10.

Other Department Activities

Computer teachers at Khalsa College are given the full opportunity to enhance their skills through regular professional development sessions. Teachers have helped each other to learn

• Software skills
• Software installation and configuration
• Hardware installation and configuration
• Managing a Local Area Network.
     
     

CHALLENGES

     
It is a challenge for Computer teachers to keep informed about changing technology and keeping their students up to date. The concept of lifelong learning is very significant for computer studies teachers.
     
     

CONCLUSION

     
The Computer Studies department has received a lot of support from the administration and the management team of Khalsa College. The management has provided the resources which are needed in the department. The administration has supported the department teachers whenever there was a need. The teachers are also commended for working very hard in line with the Ministry of Education’s, school’s and department’s mission and vision.
