INTRODUCTION

The Commerce Department is involved in teaching Accounting, Economics and Commercial Studies to the students of Khalsa College. Commercial Studies is offered to forms 3 and 4. Students specializing in Arts are offered Accounting and Economics from forms 5 to 7.  The department has five experienced teachers.

Commerce students have a wide range of career options. After tertiary studies, students can join professions such as Accountants, Financial Planners, Investment Advisors, Auditors, Bankers, Economists, Teachers and Academics.

RATIONALE
The Department stands to provide quality education that will endeavor to build a solid foundation for the students of Commerce.

VISION
To achieve recognition and success in the fields of Commerce for Khalsa College.

OTHER DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES
The Commerce Department organizes field trips for Economics students every year. The economics students of the senior forms are taken places like Hotels, Industries (both Service and Manufacturing) and Agricultural farms. These visits give the students an opportunity to observe and learn about the various aspects of the industries and develop an awareness of the progress taking place in the economy.
This year we visited the newly built five star Intercontinental Fiji Resort and Spa in Natadola Sigatoka and the Nadi Meteorological Centre.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Regular professional development is carried out in the department to enhance the learning of the department members.

CHALLENGES/SUGGESTIONS
Some of the key challenges faced by the Department include;

  • Limited resources to meet the changing demands of the Profession.
  • Increasing cost of living resulting in financial difficulties of Parents.
  • Absenteeism
  • On going changes to the curriculum

FUTURE
Notwithstanding the challenges, the Department is committed to upholding its vision and mission and provides quality education to the students. With the cooperation of the department staff and the support of the students, parents and administrators, the Commerce Department aspires to achieve its goals and set higher standards for the future.
